Gold Jacket Spotlight: Troy Aikman succeeds on another playing field

Three-time Super Bowl champion. Consensus collegiate All-American. Member of both the Pro Football and College Football halls of fame.
For some, these accolades would be more than enough to call it a career and retire from the sport of football.
Not for TROY AIKMAN.
This week’s Gold Jacket Spotlight highlights the success Troy has garnered over the past two decades in the broadcasting booth.
After a 12-year playing career with the Dallas Cowboys, Troy entered broadcasting, with FOX, immediately following his retirement at the conclusion of the 2000 season.
His knowledge of the game and ability to describe the nuances of football to viewers set his commentary apart from most others. Sports Illustrated named Troy TV’s “Best Newcomer” following his first season in the booth.
One year into his new career, Troy was elevated to the “A-Team” for “NFL on FOX.” The lineup included Cris Collinsworth and Joe Buck.
Troy earned an Emmy nomination in the category of Outstanding TV Event Analyst for his work during the 2003, 2005 and 2007 seasons.
Since 2002, he has called games alongside Buck, both at FOX and, beginning in 2022, with ESPN. The duo have become the standard for color commentary and analysis during the NFL season. They have called more than 290 regular-season games, more than 40 playoff matchups, 18 NFC Championships and Super Bowls XXXIX, XLII, XLV, XLVIII, LI and LIV.
At the beginning of the 2023 season, the two reached a historic broadcasting milestone: a record 22 consecutive years covering the NFL together. The broadcasting partners surpassed an iconic duo of Pat Summerall and legendary announcer and Hall of Fame coach JOHN MADDEN.
“The fact that I’m still doing it 23 years later is shocking to me,” Troy said in an interview following the feat, “but I think there’s a lot of good fortune and luck that goes into that.
“There are some other great broadcast teams that, for various reasons that had nothing to do with themselves, weren’t able to continue. So, the fact that even recently ESPN regarded our work that they wanted both of us just means a lot.”
With ESPN, Troy covered “Monday Night Football” for the past three seasons and continues to gain notice for his excellent work on the network. In May 2023, at the 44th annual Sports Emmy Awards, “Monday Night Football” won for “Outstanding Live Sports Series” for the previous season.
A former No. 1 overall NFL draft pick, Troy continues to provide in-depth coverage of the ever-changing landscape of the NFL and looks to cement himself as one of the best in broadcasting — similar to what he achieved on another playing field.
