Dan Fouts to present Don Coryell at 2023 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement
After Coryell accepted the head coaching position with the San Diego Chargers in 1978, he inherited Fouts as his starting quarterback, forming a duo that would work together for nine seasons (1978-1986). In 121 games under Coryell, Fouts compiled 32,865 passing yards (averaging 271.6 yards per game), completed 60.4% of his passes and threw 210 touchdown passes.
Fouts had the unique opportunity to call Mindy Coryell Lewis and Mike Coryell, Don’s children, to announce that their father was going to be forever immortalized in Canton.
“I’ve waited a long time to tell you this: Your Dad is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame,” Fouts said over the phone after Don was named a finalist seven different times.
A Hall of Fame selector himself, Fouts was named to all six of his Pro Bowls under Coryell and became the first quarterback to lead the league in passing yards in four consecutive seasons (1979-1982), a record that still stands.
The Class of 2023 will be enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, Aug. 5, at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton. Tickets for Enshrinement are available at www.profootballhof.com/tickets.
